Animal Shamanism

Living in Vermont for the past five years has taught me much about Nature and the lessons Animals can teach us when we listen.  In order to grow, a snake must first shed it's skin.  In order to soar like a bird we must first take a step.  To develop spiritual insight we must dive into our subconscious and heal our past.  When I look at animals in nature I see lessons to learn and I am compelled to share my thoughts and insights through painting.

At different points in my life I have found that I gravitate towards particular animals.  Some remain the same while others last only a small period of time; a momentary lesson or concept in development.  Periodically I produce paintings which I refer to as "totems" revealing to me which animals are impacting me at that particular point in time.  This is as close to a self portrait as I will go, using symbols and animals icons to write the story of my life in the present.  It is a process I greatly enjoy  and wish to share with others.

I have found that the "chance" animals that we see, gravitate towards or encounter in our physical life is more than a coincidence.  If you wish to learn more about animals and their archetypal meanings I whole-heartedly recommend a fantastic book by Ted Andrews titled "Animal Speak."  For more information, please take the time to visit the author's website at www.llewellyn.com.
